KARACHI: Pakistani cricketer Shaheen Shah Afridi misbehaved with the coaches during Pakistan’s recent tours to Ireland and England before the T20 World Cup 2024 as it was revealed after Senior Manager Wahab Riaz and Team Manager Mansoor Rana were removed from the selection committee.
Sources told Geo News the inside story of what happened during the practice sessions, saying that Shaheen misbehaved with batting coach Mohammad Yousuf during the England tour.
Yousuf pointed out Shaheen for bowling too many no-balls during a practice session at Headingley, to which the left-arm pacer said: “Let me practice for now and don’t talk in the middle.”
Shaheen’s comments were not appreciated by the former batter and the two had a heated exchange after that. The pacer was reprimanded by the team management following the incident and he apologised to Yousuf in front of everyone.
Following Shaheen’s apology, the team management dismissed the matter.
Earlier, it was reported that Shaheen misbehaved with the coaches and management during recent tours but no action was taken by the team managers on the pacer’s inappropriate behaviour due to which Riaz and Rana were removed from their posts due to lack of discipline.
Sources added that maintaining discipline in the team was the responsibility of the managers which is why it is being investigated why action was not taken against Shaheen despite misbehaving.
The players who have formed lobbies in the team are also being investigated, sources added.
Meanwhile, coaches have also highlighted the non-serious attitude of some of the players in their reports.
The players also speak against each other which ruins the atmosphere in the team, sources further revealed.
It is worth mentioning that a new formula has been decided by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the new selection committee for the men’s team.
The head coaches of both white-ball and red-ball formats will be included in the national selection committee. Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten will be part of the committee along with Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq with the captain of the respective format.
