Jamie Redknapp has slammed Raheem Sterling after his camp released a statement before Sunday’s game against Manchester City.

Sterling was surprisingly left out of the squad for the visit of his former club with Enzo Maresca later describing it as a technical decision with Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk preferred.

It’s been reported that Chelsea are open to selling the 29-year-old but given his extortionate wages and the fact he’s settled in London that could prove difficult.

Redknapp delivers scathing assessment of Sterling statement

Following his omission from the squad Sterling’s camp released a statement before kick off saying they were surprised by the omission and would be seeking clarity on the situation.

Former Premier League player Redknapp issued a scathing response when asked about the statement and described it as rubbish.

Sterling’s Chelsea future is up in the air.

“He must have initiated that,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“It’s really nice of him to come back two weeks early. He didn’t have the Euros, you don’t need to talk about it, just get on with it, play better.

“He hasn’t been great at Chelsea. When he’s come into games or started matches, he hasn’t been good enough.

“So if the manager doesn’t play you, you don’t get your representatives to come out and do that. Especially the day of the game. I think that’s absolute rubbish. He should do better than that. His representatives should do better than that.

“I think that’s a really poor statement. There’s 30 other players not in the squad who could put statements out. He hasn’t done well enough. If you think you’ve done well in pre-season, just keep doing better.”

Sterling has three years left on his current deal and scored eight goals in 31appearances for the Blues last season.

However, it now appears his future is in doubt and being left out of the squad could be a clear message to look for another club as he isn’t part of the plans.
