Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has hinted at a shock exit from Old Trafford a day after reports suggested the club were open to selling the majority of their squad this summer.
Having won the Carabao Cup and finished third in his first season, Erik ten Hag has endured a difficult campaign with the Red Devils currently sixth in the Premier League.
United got knocked out in the Champions League group stages and their defence of the Carabao Cup ended early, however they have made the FA Cup final for the second year running.
Fernandes hints his future could lie away from Old Trafford
The 29-year-old has been one of the few positives in a dismal season for the Old Trafford outfit, scoring 15 goals and providing 11 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.
The Portugal international is under contract until 2026, with United having an option to extend his deal by a further year.
However, Fernandes appears to have cast doubt over his United future and has insisted he needs to feel wanted at Old Trafford, having joined from Sporting Lisbon in 2020.
“I’m not thinking about other things at the momen”, he told DAZNPortugal.
“Obviously, it doesn’t just depend on me, does it? A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides.”
The Portuguese noted that any discussion over his future would take place after this summer’s Euros.
“I’m not thinking too much about the future, not least because, obviously, this season hasn’t been at the level I’d hoped for, either individually or collectively, so far”, he added.
“We could still end the season by winning the [FA] Cup. After that, we have a very important Euros coming up.
“So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it won’t be until after the Euros because nothing will be able to take my focus away from the FA Cup final and the Euros, as there’s nothing more important than that at the moment.”
Fernandes’ immediate focus will be on ensuring United qualify for the Europa and win the FA Cup, before helping Portugal this summer.
