Competition: EFL Cup
Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 2/3 @ BetUS
Two camps who will turn their attention back to EFL Cup action on Tuesday night, Blackpool will welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Bloomfield Road.
Starting with the hosts, although Blackpool might find themselves battling it out at the wrong end of the League One table, the Seasiders have their sights firmly set on booking a play-off ticket this season. Snatching what was a stunning last-gasp 2-1 victory at home against Exeter over the weekend, new boss Steve Bruce will be calling on his squad to use that late flurry as a platform to build on. Extending on their EFL Trophy adventure earlier in the month as they opened September with a routine 4-1 romp against Crewe, the Lancashire-based outfit are unbeaten in all of their previous five appearances across all competitions. However, despite turning a recent corner, the former Newcastle boss will be calling on his squad to find some much-needed defensive resolve. Including a remarkable 4-4 stalemate away at Cambridge United on August 24th, Tuesday’s hosts have recorded just a single clean sheet since opening up the new campaign.
As for the visitors, while Sheffield Wednesday might have completed a famous great escape last season as they managed to keep hold of their Championship status, Danny Rohl’s men have struggled to find any real stability this time around. Despite opening up the new campaign with an empathic 4-0 romp at home against Plymouth on August 11th, Tuesday’s guests have since failed to win any of their previous four showdowns against second-tier opposition. Suffering last-gasp heartbreak at home against QPR over the weekend as they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate at Hillsborough, Wednesday are seeking their own defensive steel. Hit with a woeful 4-0 drumming at the hands of Sunderland last month, Rohl’s camp have failed to record a single clean sheet from any of their previous six matchups across all competitions. Despite winning their last three showdowns against Blackpool by an aggregate score of 4-0, the Owls could face a tricky test here.
