An unfortunate incident occurred in Australia where a 16-year-old boy was ruthlessly killed by a large crocodile on the coast of Saibai Island in the Torres Strait, reported Fox News Sunday.
The outlet reported that the victim was swimming with another 13-year-old boy after the engine of their dinghy stopped suddenly.
They decided to reach the shore of the island — 560 miles north of the city of Cairns — on their own.
Queensland Police’s Far North District Senior Sergeant Greg Giles told the media that the 16-year-old vanished after the boys went into waist-deep water.
The boat breakdown happened not far from the land, he said, adding: “Unfortunately the older boy’s body was located in the mangroves. We are working with the coroner to identify that person.”
Officials also said that the 13-year-old boy did not see a crocodile before his companion was nowhere to be seen.
“He’s pretty shaken up as you could imagine,” Giles said, according to the Brisbane Times.
“He was very close to the other boy when he went missing so no doubt it would have affected him.”
The island is geographically close to Papua New Guinea but it is part of the the State of Queensland.
The outlet further reported citing local media that authorities confirmed the consistency of the victim’s wounds with that of a crocodile attack.
