Ukraine’s Air Forces reported on Sunday morning they shot down 10 Iranian-developed kamikaze drones overnight as Russia targeted multiple regions with fresh aerial attacks.
According to the military, Russia launched a total of 12 Shahed-136 drones from occupied Crimea and Russian territory toward the Mykolaiv and Khmelnytskyi regions shortly after midnight local time. The kamikaze drones approached in several waves via the Russian-occupied Kherson Oblast before being intercepted.
The bulk of the drones were destroyed by anti-aircraft units over the Mykolaiv region in Ukraine’s south. Air defenses in the Khmelnytskyi region, located in western Ukraine, accounted for the remaining unmanned aerial vehicles. An X-59 guided missile separately launched from Russia’s Belgorod region was also intercepted.
In total, 10 Shahed drones were destroyed. While no Ukrainian casualties or infrastructure damage were reported, it remains undisclosed what targets, if any, the remaining two drones hit.
The bombardment marks the latest nighttime drone attack aimed at wearing down Ukraine’s defenses and critical infrastructure as the war nears its 23rd month. Russia intensified its attacks using Shahed drones recently, with previous attacks happening also on Friday night and Saturday evening.
